Landa, the owner & proprietor of Anne’s Kitchen, makes the best pancakes, and she knows it. She says with a laugh that all of the moms in Powell hate her for it too. They make pancakes for their children, only to have them rebuked, and to be told, “Mom, I want Pancakes from Anne’s. They’re better”.
And 99 out of 100 times, I’m willing to bet that those kids are spot on. Landa’s pancakes are so good that they’ll bring you to your knees.
Anne’s Kitchen Southern Style | Powell’s Best Breakfast
When people ask what part of town I live in, I claim Powell, even though we have a Dublin address, and when that raises eyebrows I follow with the area in which Dublin, Powell, and Worthington come together. We spend more time in Powell than we do anywhere else.
We’d seen Anne’s Southern Kitchen a few times, as we’d been in and out of Gallos Tap Room (another go-to of ours up here in Powell for the nights that neither of us wants to cook. Don’t judge. Y’all know you have them too) and talked about going for about six months before we made it in, and I can tell you that we waited six months too long to finally get there.
That first morning there Jeff and I sat at the counter, talked about whatever it was, realistically it was banter while he checked sports on his phone, and I was on Instagram, (the being social part of social media). and soaked in the warmth and the feeling of community that fills Landa’s place. Then we got our food, Landa’s cooking is down-home soul food at it’s finest.
I asked Landa, as we were leaving if she’d be willing to sit down with me and tell me her story. She said yes.
Cooking as a Calling
Landa’s career, from the time, that she was 16 up till the time she bought Anne’s, had been working in other peoples restaurants. Food and feeding people is what she’s the most passionate about, and having her own place was always something she knew would come to pass, it was just a matter of when it would be the right time. The right time came when Anne’s went up for sale, and everything else fell into place.
As we chatted, I asked as to the reasoning of keeping the name Anne’s, rather than changing it to Landa’s. Her pragmatic answer summed up her deep love of cooking perfectly.
We already had the sign, why waste money on a new one? Besides, it’s about the cooking, the feeding people, not the name on the door
Everything on the menu, it’s made with love, and you can tell in a real big way.
