Let’s talk pizza.
Growing up in Portland, pizza options were a little limited, and until the last 10 or so years, remained that way. Even with the expansion of options, Portland has NOTHING on Columbus when it comes to pizza.
Mikey’s Late Night Slice
The variety, and sheer volume, of pizza places out here is mind-blowing.
Every best of list that we’ve seen has Mikey’s Late Night on it. EVERY. SINGLE. ONE.
It only took six months for us to get there.
A couple weekends ago we got all gussied up to go to a fundraising gala for a non-profit that I volunteer with, and it ended fairly early. Jeff and I decided that as we were dressed up, downtown, and not ready to head home yet. We unanimously agreed that we needed pizza, and that it needed to be Mikey’s.
You walk through the door, and immediately the smell of garlic, tomatoes, yeasty dough, and all around pizza deliciousness wraps around you like a big hug. It’s awesome.
You weave through the rails that guide the line, because as we all know, late night pizza often means you’ve had a few cocktails, and probably need help standing in line…. because, cocktails.
Pizzas that are available by the slice are all displayed, so not only can you read the descriptions of these killer pies, you can check out the visuals, which is incredibly helpful.
They definitely have things other than pizza…. but for this first time, we were all about pizza and cheesy breadsticks. Because cheesy breadsticks.
I myself am a pepperoni purist when it comes to trying a new pizza place (drives Jeff crraaaaazzy). I figure that if I’m going to be comparing pizza to pizza, I need to really be comparing pizza to pizza. Jeff went with the spicy pepperoni (yes, it is different), and we got a slice of steak gorgonzola. (which by the way, if they have it, you NEED to try it.)
The fella’s that started MLN just bought Brewzza, up in Lewis Center, on HWY 23, with plans to revamp thier pizza, but keep the concept as it is now, rather than rolling it over into a North side Mikey’s. You can read more about that in the Columbus Dispatch article here.
Their downtown location is friendly, welcoming, and all around kick ass. If you’re out late and hungry, (drunk munchies anyone?) this is the place to be.
